Nirmal: Superintendent of Police Dr Janaki Sharmila launched a first-of-its-kind innovative ‘Police Akka’ programme to ensure security of girls to mark International Women’s Day. As part of the programme, a woman police constable would stay at a government hostel for girls once in a month and raise awareness over various topics.

Janaki Sharmila said 18 women police officials were identified to implement the initiative. The constables would adopt 18 government-run hostels belonging to Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas in the district.

“The constable will visit the hostels monthly once. They will create awareness among the students over them about good and bad touch, cybercrimes, security of women, rights provided by the Constitution, legal provisions, etc. They will provide counselling to the girls if required. They act as sisters of the girls,” Sharmila told ‘Telangana Today.’

According to the SP, the constables would stay at the hostels at night and mingle with the girls. They would ensure the girls don’t face any problems. They would bring major challenges to the notice of the SP, who would take steps to address the grievances at the earliest. They are going to be trained in helping the girls in overcoming their challenges by conducting online meetings to be held by Sharmila at regular intervals.

The constables would prepare follow-up reports after completion of their visits, incorporating details of their visit, challenges, recommendation, etc., They are advised to share details of agitations in the hostels with higher officials. They will have to cover at least a hostel per month.
