Telangana sailors shine at Asian Games 2026 selection trials in Mumbai
Telangana sailors delivered an impressive performance at the Nagoya 2026 Asian Games first selection trials in Mumbai, winning four medals, including a gold, as the Yacht Club of Hyderabad continued its strong presence on the national sailing stage.

HYDERABAD: Telangana once again ruled the waves at the national sailing scene but this time it’s a crucial sailing championship , The Nagoya Japan 2026 Asian Games First selection Trials at Mumbai .
Eight sailors from Telangana were training at Mumbai for 45 days and finished with flying colours with a total of 4 medals with one Gold , two Silvers and one Bronze
This is the first time that the Asian Games have a junior category and the Yacht Club of Hyderabad maximised their capability to position 4 entries , one in the senior and 3 in the under 18 categories, head coach Sueheim Sheikh said.
The Yacht Club of Hyderabad has started an intensive Skiff training program at Hussain Sagar and have procured a large number of boats and skiffs alongside inviting the finest coaches in the world to help augment the high performance efforts that resulted in this medal haul, he said.
Lahiri Komaravelly Hyderabad’s under 15 Sub Junior National champion missed the Oman International to train on the 29er Skiffs and immediately secured a Gold in the first trials with crew Eswa Goud.
Her sister Deekshita with crew Abdul Raheem of Parsi School Secunderabad finished with a tightly fought silver losing by a marginal 0.44 points behind the Gold won by Ekalavya Batham of Bhopal .
Thanuja Kameshwar and crew Dharani Laveti finished a creditable second in the senior skiff class and often beat the much more experienced Harshita Tomar of the Indian Navy across a few legs . Thanuja and Dharani have recently migrated to the 49er Fx class and proved their mettle against the best in India Harshita Tomar and Shital Verma of the Navy, Sueheim explained.
Deekshita and Lahiri are students of Kallam anti Reddy School and Udbhav School Rasoolpura respectively
“Two of our students , Eswa Suragani Goud from Motakondur School Suryapet and Arvind Mahlot Dharamaram School, Kamareddy were selected by the Yacht Club of Hyderabad from amongst 100 potential sailors from the Mahatma Jyotibai Phule Telangana Backward Classes Welfare Schools (MJPT) and both performed creditably at the national level“, said the Secretary of MJPT B.Saidulu, IFS
Eswa and Arvind arrived at the Yacht Cub of Hyderabad just 7 months ago and trained at Hussain Sagar and Mandva Mumbai , have proved their sportsmanship with Eswa winning the first trials and Arvind getting a bronze. A long way ahead for the later but Eswa Goud is firmly in control of the selections at this stage under her experienced skipper Lahiri Komaravelly
With two more trials to be held at Mumbai in January and February 2026 the teams are headed for the IndiaI International Regatta in Chennai to gain more exposure and are training at the Sucharita Academy for enhanced fitness and strength training under the able guidance of Sivaprasad their fitness coach.
“While we could have done a bit better we are surely getting back to the drawing board and will work harder to secure selections to the Asian Games in Nagoya Japan”, said Suheim, who is also the Director of High Performance and president of Yacht Club of Hyderabad
