There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million. – Walt Streightiff. A Child’s brain is designed to learn. When we provide children with enriching experiences, it promotes their aptitude such that their learning pathways become refined and strengthened.
The following steps would guide as a road map to stimulate children’s curiosity:
Firstly, we must reinforce their curiosity with open approval by acknowledging it as one of their most important traits. Children ask a lot of questions and addressing their questions means letting them understand we heard them and would like to find answers along with them. This encourages them and develops their competency to learn new things.
Secondly, we must build their curiosity by asking open-ended questions such as what is likely to happen next? What do you think? and cultivate a need for them to figure out things on their own.
Furthermore, we can fuel their curiosity by exploring opportunities and discovering together such as watching a butterfly on a flower or comparing leaves concerning size, shape, or colour. An environment that fosters curiosity is also the one that embraces investigation and discovery.
While preschoolers enjoy finding and displaying nature collections like pebbles or leaves, young learners make even broader collections such as car models or miniature toys. This would further extend their learning and motivate them to pursue their interests.
It is important for the adults to actively participate, respond and celebrate every small moment to help children progress towards the path of making their discoveries.
