New Delhi: We all know the drill: third party car insurance, the legal requirement, is the financial shield against accidental damages to a third person or property. It is a non-negotiable item on our car annual expenses. But, beyond the basics, a third-party policy plays a significant role in safeguarding you financially and caring for the well-being of others on the road. Let’s learn about its benefits and importance in responsible driving, along with several misconceptions about it.

Importance of Car Insurance: Addressing the Rise in Accidents in India

Globally, India records one of the highest rates of road accidents. Data from a 2022 report by theMinistry of Road Transport and Highways, there were over 4.61 lakh accidents, resulting in above 1.68 lakh fatalities and over 4.43 lakh injuries, marking an upsurge of around 11.9% in accidents, 9.4% in deaths, and 15.3% in injuries compared to 2021.

These dire numbers highlight the very importance of at least a third party car insurance, which acts as an essential safety net for every car owner. While a third party policy is mandatory as per Indian motor laws, it is ideal to opt for a comprehensive plan for wider coverage. Let’s understand how a comprehensive plan differs from 3rd party car insurance.

Key Differences Between Third Party & Comprehensive Policies

The table below highlights the coverage offered under 3rd party insurance & comprehensive policies:

Coverage Third-Party Motor Insurance Comprehensive Motor Insurance
Own Damages TP liabilities only TP + Own Damages due to accidents, natural/man-made disasters, fire, theft, etc.
Policy Premium Low. Decided by IRDAI. Higher. Coverage for both third party liabilities and own damages.
Car Theft No coverage is offered Partial or total losses due to theft (coverage up to the insured vehicle’s IDV)
Personal Accident (PA) Cover Yes PA cover for the insured vehicle’s owner-driver.
Add-ons Not available Availability of add-ons like zero dep, roadside assistance, engine protection, NCB Protect, consumables cover, etc.

Third Party Insurance Inclusions and Exclusions

Check out what all is included in and excluded from a 3rd party insurance policy:

●   Third Party Car Insurance Inclusions

  • Third Party Property Damages: If your insured vehicle damages another individual’s vehicle or other property, your third party policy provides a compensation of up to Rs. 7.5 Lakh to the victim.
  • 3rd Party Injury/Death:There is no limit to the compensation offered in case of death or disability of the third person. The MACT decides the compensation amount based on the loss of future earnings, age & income of 3rd party, and dependency of family members, as well as the severity of the injury and medical expenses incurred in case of injuries.
  • Personal Accident Cover for the Owner-Driver: The Personal Accident (PA) add-on cover offers compensation to the owner/driver of the insured vehicle in case of injuries resulting from an accident. In the event of a death, the compensation amount is given to the nominee assigned by the policyholder at the time of policy purchase.

●   Third Party Car Insurance Exclusions

  • Damages to Own Vehicle: No coverage is offered for the damages sustained by the insured vehicle from accidents, natural or man-made calamities, fire or theft.
  • Losses/Damages When Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs: Claims are rejected for any damages or losses if the driver was found to be drunk or under the influence of drugs.
  • Damages When Driving Without Driving Licence: No coverage is provided if the owner-driver of the insured vehicle doesn’t have a valid driving licence.
  • Outside Geographical Scope of Coverage: Any damages or losses from an accident that happened outside the geographical area as specified in the policy document are not covered.
  • Damages Due to Unauthorized Usage: Any damages or losses sustained if the insured vehicle is used contrary to ‘limitations as to use’, for instance, a private vehicle being used for commercial purposes or the car being used for illegal acts, such as racing, etc.

Third Party Car Insurance Premium Rates

The IRDAI decides third party car insurance premium prices, which are based on the cubic capacity (CC) of the car’s engine:

Engine Capacity Third Party Insurance Premium
Less than equals to 1000 cc Rs. 2094/-
More than 1000 cc & Less than 1500 cc Rs. 3416/-
Above 1500 cc Rs. 7897/-

Some Common Misbeliefs About Third Party Car Insurance

Listed below are some common misunderstandings people have about 3rd party car insurance:

●   Older Cars Do Not Require Third-Party Insurance

Several individuals think that older cars do not require insurance, as their vehicle’s market value is lower. However, third-party (TP) insurance is not about your car but other individuals if your vehicle causes any damages to them or their property in an accident. Hence, no matter how old your car is, third-party insurance remains the mandatory policy for every vehicle owner to ply on Indian roads.

●   3rd Party Insurance Doesn’t Require Renewal Every Year

Some individuals wrongly believe they don’t need to renew third party insurance, even though it is a mandatory policy. However, this is not true. Unless it’s a brand-new car that comes with a 1-year Own Damage and 3-year TP plan, you need to renew your policy every year for continued coverage. In fact, some insurers have also started offering 3+3 policies, which cover both own damages and 3rd party liabilities for 3 years.

●   You Don’t Require Third-Party Insurance If You Drive Less

Another misconception! Even if your car is used infrequently, you must have at least a third-party insurance policy. Not having one can result in legal implications, including fines, suspension of license, and even potential imprisonment.

●   Comprehensive Policies are Always Costlier Than 3rd-Party Insurance

Certainly! While a third-party policy offers the basic minimum coverage, a comprehensive plan provides broader protection, which makes it more expensive than the former.

Wrapping Up

Now that we’ve understood the critical role of third-party car insurance in fostering a secure driving environment, you’re now in a better position to make a sound decision when it comes to choosing car insurance. Consider how it influences your own driving behaviour. Think about the reassurance it provides by ensuring your financial protection as well as the safety of other individuals out there on the road. Just remember to explore different car insurance quotes from multiple insurers and carefully go through policy inclusions & exclusions to ensure optimal protection against unforeseen repercussions of road accidents.

It’s now your turn. As a responsible driver, what will you do to not only comply with the law but also enhance the safety of the community around you?
