Nirmal: The sighting of a tiger by a farmer in a cotton field created a flutter on the peripherals of Chata village in Kubheer mandal on Tuesday.
Sources said that Shankar, a farmer of Chata village, spotted the big cat moving in the field. He alerted neighbouring farmers who raised an alarm, sending the carnivore back to the forest. The villagers requested the forest officials to take steps to prevent tiger movement in agriculture fields, fearing attack.
In-charge District Forest Officer Vikas Meena told Telangana Today that a tigress from Maharashtra entered the forests in Nirmal district a month ago. The big cat’s movements were being tracked and a special team was formed for regular monitoring of the movement. Camera traps were also placed to map locations of the territorial animal.
The IFS officer said that evidences pertaining to direct and indirect sightings were being gathered. Awareness was also being created among rural folks over the movement of the tigress and steps were taken to prevent man-animal conflict, he said, adding that the carnivore was moving towards Nirmal district and was returning to Maharashtra.
Foresters are regularly in touch with their counterparts in Nanded division of the neighbouring State to ensure conservation of the big cat. Pugmarks of the migrant tigress recorded in several parts of the district were unclear due to rains. The tigress’ entry into the forest of this region, however, brought cheer among the forest officials in the district.
