Counting process progressing at counting hall in Khammam on Monday
Khammam: Riding high on the development wave, the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has retained Khammam Municipal Corporation (KMC).
The TRS scripted a sweeping victory on Monday in the KMC election bagging 43 of the total 60 municipal divisions. It may be recalled that the TRS won the first KMC election held in 2016 by winning 34 divisions of the 50 divisions.
Including the three municipal divisions which the TRS’s election ally CPI won, the tally of the TRS-CPI alliance was 46. Congress, which managed to secure double digit seats -10- in the 2016 election was confined to a single digit seat – 9 – this time.
BJP managed to win one division while the CPI (M) and independents won in two divisions each. A total of 250 candidates contested for 59 municipal divisions as the TRS candidate, Chava Madhuri was elected unanimously from the 10th division.
Thus the TRS contested for 56 divisions, Congress- 48, BJP -47, CPI- 3, CPI(M)-9, TDP-8, Independents- 67 while 12 candidates from recognised parties in other States such as Jana Sena Party and other political parties contested in the election.
Reacting after the announcement of the election results, Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar profusely thanked Khammam voters and people for giving such a resounding one-third majority victory in KMC elections.
The minister assured to strive hard further to live up to the expectations of the people of Khammam city and develop the city to world class standards. He also thanked the party MP, MLC, ZP Chairmen and the party cadre for their untiring efforts in bringing this result.
The KMC election result proved beyond doubt that the public trusted in the leadership of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, Ajay Kumar noted while MP Nama Nageswar Rao said whatever be the election, the victory belongs to the TRS.
The counting process took place at SR&BGNR College where 10 halls with each three tables were set up for the purpose. Around 270 counting staff were engaged in the task of counting the votes in six rounds amid tight security following covid norms.
District Collector RV Karnan, election general observer Nadeem Ahmed, Municipal Commissioner Anurag Jayanthi were present at the counting centre to monitor the counting process.
