Hyderabad: Facilities of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), including bus-shelters, might soon turn into artworks. This is after TSRTC managing director VC Sajjanar gave a call to his officials to emulate a model set forth by the Narayanpet district administration.
The district administration had come up with an innovative idea to curb defacement of bus shelters and public places. Instead of taking up enforcement activity by penalising people who litter public places by pasting stickers and other advertisement elements, artwork depicting the culture and heritage of rural India was painted on bus shelters as part of an anti-defacement drive. An elephant, different types of rangolis in white on a red background were the artworks taken up on one of the bus shelters. The seating arrangement inside the facility was also brushed with artwork, ensuring a decent place for people waiting for buses.
Following this, Sajjanar tweeted asking officials to replicate the model in other bus shelters. “On Behalf of #TSRTC Management, I appreciate @HarichandanaIAS @CNarayanpet for innovative idea of projecting Heritage & Culture of #Rural India to younger generation. I hope all other officers emulate the initiative which in turn also develop,” (sic) he tweeted.
Earlier similar artworks including Mandala paintings were taken up at several places in the district which are vulnerable to defacement. The compound walls of public washrooms were also painted in an attempt to give the civic amenities a tidy look and encourage people to use them.
