Hyderabad: The contract workers in health care facilities that fall under Telangana Vaidya Vidhan Parishad (TVVP) in Telangana State on Monday have served notices to Commissioner, Dr Ajaya Kumar, to conduct a massive dharna and protest meet on February 19 over unpaid salaries, which have been pending for the past 7 months.
Since January 21, the contract workers, who take care of vital duties including patient care, sanitation and security, have been wearing black badges to work and also participating in daily one-hour protests at all TVVP health care facilities in Telangana State.
“Despite conducting peaceful protests, the State government, private contractors/agencies, which recruit contract workers and TVVP management have not responded to our travails. They do not care about the plight of the workers, who struggle to make ends meet without salaries. We are left with no choice but to escalate and conduct a dharna-cum-protest in front of TVVP office,” says Telangana Medical Contract Employees Workers Union, State president, Md Yousuf and General Secretary, M Narasimha.
Narasima made it clear that the private agencies are clearly exploiting workers by paying them low salaries and not paying them on time. The union leaders demanded that the government immediately release the funds and ensure that the workers are paid their salaries.
“Why can’t there be a system in place wherein the State government, TVVP and private agencies release our salaries on time? We are forced to launch protests every six months because of inordinate delay in release of salaries,” Narasimha said.
