Hyderabad: Seeking removal of the common cut-off mark for MPhil and PhD admissions, the University of Hyderabad (UoH) Students’ Union on Saturday staged a protest on the campus. They also demanded that candidates be called for interviews in the ratio of 1:6.

According to the union, candidates were shortlisted by the varsity for MPhil and PhD interviews by defining a minimum 50 per cent for general/EWS categories and 45 per cent for the SC/ST/OBC/PWD categories, citing the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines.

Students said the cut-off mark would exclude several students particularly from marginalised communities from admissions. Even before interviews were conducted, 71 seats were left vacant. Of the total vacant seats, 64 were under the reserved category, they added.

“The releasing of shortlisted candidates for interview by the university is condemnable and discriminatory as it left 71 seats vacant even before interviews. After interviews, there will be more vacant seats. The same UGC guidelines state that no seat should be left vacant in the reserved categories. We demand the university to remove the cut-off marks for MPhil and PhD admissions and implement the 1:6 ratio,” said UoH Students’ Union general secretary Gopi Swamy.
