Karimnagar: Instead of confining to watching TV serials, women should develop awareness on laws, District Judge and District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) chairman MG Priyadarshini advised the women.
The Indian constitution has provided equal rights to women on par with men. So, women should develop awareness about laws and their rights. Informing that legal services came to the doorsteps of the people, she advised the people to utilize the services. District Judge participated in an awareness programme held to educate women about laws organized by DLSA as part of the pan-India Awareness and Outreach Programme held at Revenue Gardens here on Saturday.
To educate the people about Fundamental Rights and Duties and free legal services facilities to the poor provided through Article 39 of the Constitution, DLSA organised an awareness programme in 1,244 villages in the erstwhile Karimnagar district as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav from October 2 to November 14. Under the free legal services facility, DLSA would arrange advocates by paying a fee to argue on behalf of the poor in criminal and civil cases. Without knowing it, the poor were appointing advocates though they were not financially capable.
Economically backward, women, children, unorganised sector workers and weaker sections would be provided free legal services, she informed. The judge advised women organisations to educate people about laws in rural areas. There should be a woman constable if the police wanted to arrest a woman in connection with a case. Moreover, women should not be arrested after 6 pm and must be produced in court within 24 hours.
Women should be aware of such laws, she said and advised childless parents to adopt children according to law to avoid problems in the future. Law provides equal rights to sisters on par with brothers in their parents’ property. Women should approach courts if any damage occurred to their rights and DLSA would arrange an advocate, the Judge informed.
Additional Collector (local bodies) Garima Agarwal, DLSA Secretary B Sujaya Kumar, First Additional District Judge Bhavani Chandra, Additional DCP Srinivas, MEPMA PD B Ravinder, DRDA PD Srilatha, DMHO Dr Juveria, Karimnagar Bar Association president Raghunandan Rao and others were present.
