Youngster dies after bike crashes into Balanagar flyover railing
A truck driver was proceeding on the bike alone from KPHB 9th Phase towards the Regional Transport Authority in Trimulgherry for a driving test, when the mishap occurred in the afternoon.
Hyderabad: A motorbike that crashed into the railings of the city’s newest flyover, its fastest too, killing the rider, is turning out to be quite perplexing after a video of the accident came out.
The accident, which was in the afternoon on Tuesday on the Balanagar flyover, inaugurated just two weeks ago, saw Y. Ashok Manikanta (25), a truck driver from Prakasam of Andhra Pradesh, driving a bike and crashing into the side safety railing of the flyover, falling off the bike and being declared dead at hospital later.
According to the police, Ashok was proceeding on the bike from his brother’s residence in KPHB 9th Phase towards the Regional Transport Authority in Trimulgherry for a driving test.
The police version is that he was driving quite fast and on reaching the middle of the flyover, lost control of the bike to go on to crash into the iron safety railing on the left side. Due to the impact of the crash, his head hit the railing, and though he was wearing a helmet, he suffered grievous head injuries and collapsed on the spot. He was rushed in an ambulance to a nearby private hospital in Balanagar, where doctors declared him dead.
A CCTV grab shows Ashok on the bike ahead of a few other cars and slowly swerving towards his left and strangely driving straight into the railing, crashing into it and being thrown off the bike.
Family members have told the police that Ashok could have been ill and was unable to drive properly. Whether the brakes malfunctioned or what actually happened remains a mystery. The police have registered a case and are investigating.
The six-lane, two-way flyover is the first one in the city designed to drive at 60 kmph as against 40 kmph on other flyovers and built with central medians and crash barriers on either side of the road for safety.
