Hyderabad: Since statehood, the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has successfully conducted a record 742 kidney transplant surgeries free of cost to needy patients suffering from chronic kidney ailments in Telangana.
While last year the kidney transplants had to be halted due to the uncertainty during the first Covid wave, the surgeons and health care workers at NIMS have managed to restart the vital kidney transplant services this year. By this December, NIMS doctors have already conducted 100 kidney transplant surgeries, out of which 90 were covered under State-run Aarogyasri health insurance scheme.
Appreciating the efforts of the NIMS surgeons for conducting transplant services despite the threat of the pandemic, Health Minister, T Harish Rao on Thursday said the State government is making all out efforts to offer similar transplant services across all the state-run tertiary care facilities.
“It is the vision of Chief Minister, K Chandrashekhar Rao to provide quality healthcare services for free of cost to poor patients in government hospitals. We are creating high-end medical infrastructure for transplantation at Gandhi and OGH also,” he said.
Between 1989 and 2014, the NIMS hospital had conducted a total of 649 kidney transplant services, a majority of which were living-related donor kidneys. However, since the launch of state-run Jeevandan organ donation initiative in 2013, the cadaver organ donation too has picked up. While there were only 649 kidney transplants before statehood, in the last eight years, the surgeons conducted 742 kidney transplants. The State government is incurring up to Rs. 12 lakh towards taking-up a single kidney transplant surgery.
“For improvement of quality of healthcare services, there is a definite need for government hospitals in Telangana to compete with corporate hospitals. In this direction, several measures have been taken-up to improve medical infrastructure, which is vital for sustaining the quality of medical services in government hospitals,” Harish Rao said.
