Hyderabad: In a significant milestone for the renowned Armoor turmeric, the Geographical Indication (GI) Registry Chennai has accepted the application for GI tag for the turmeric variety besides giving technical nod.

The application was filed by two farmers’ associations – Armoor Farmers Producer Cooperative Society Limited, Manthani and Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Society Limited, Armoor, Nizamabad.

Telangana Horticultural University associate dean and principal investigator of the GI project Dr Pidigam Saidaiah gathered vital information about proof of origin of Armoor turmeric, varietal characters, biochemical profiling, farmers’ practices, and DNA tagging. He also collected links of geography for unique characters of the turmeric variety grown in Nizamabad district.

Human Welfare Association General Secretary Dr Rajanikanth, known as the GI man of India, acted as GI technical facilitator and filed GI application on behalf of the farmers.

Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University Vice Chancellor Dr Danda Raji Reddy said the GI registration could be a game-changer for farmers, especially those cultivating Armoor turmeric. It has economic and market advantages especially premium pricing, market differentiation and export potential, he added.
