Hyderabad: The Centre on Monday clarified that multiple new airport proposals from Telangana remain stalled at the preliminary stage, with feasibility studies rejecting two sites and key approvals pending for others. Replies tabled in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol outlined a mixed, largely uncertain status for five upcoming airport projects across the State.
Responding to BRS MP Vaddiraju Ravichandra, the Union Minister said pre-feasibility studies were completed for three of the four proposed Greenfield airports, i.e. Kothagudem, Mahabubnagar and Jakranpally (Nizamabad). Of these, Kothagudem and Mahabubnagar were found not feasible, while Jakranpally was deemed technically feasible but subject to removing man-made obstacles and securing a Defence Ministry NOC. The study for Anthergaon in Peddapalli is yet to be completed.
He reiterated that under the Greenfield Airports Policy, the onus of identifying suitable land, securing clearances, funding and execution lies with the State government or project proponent, and timelines depend on land acquisition, rehabilitation, environmental approvals and financial closure.
In a separate reply to Congress MP M Anil Kumar Yadav, the Centre stated that the development of the Warangal airport was contingent upon the State government handing over 253 acres required by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
