Hyderabad: India is a youthful country, with the highest youth and children population in the world. The National Youth Day is a recognition of the contribution youth make to society and in the nation-building. A healthy youth generation has an unmatched potential to contribute towards the betterment of our society. It is about the rights young people have access to education, healthcare, employment, monetary services and complete participation in public life and the duties to their country.
The National Youth Day is celebrated in India to mark Swami Vivekananda’s birthday on January 12 every year. It is also called ‘Yuwa Diwas.’ The day calls for youth to be engaged in social development activities such as volunteering programmes, competitions and events that promote spirit of positive energy and drives that are good for fellow citizens such as blood donation etc.
It is to further strengthen the five universal teachings of Swami Vivekananda related to, ‘Its all in the mind’, ‘Follows the three Ps: Purity, Patience and Perseverance, ‘To be pure and to do good to others, ‘End hunger and ignorance’, ‘No man is born to any religion.’
Youth Day signifies the spirit of secular thought and action, doing good to others, standing for the cause of society, peaceful and nonviolent resolution of conflicts, national integration, spirit of communal harmony and brotherhood, and the youthful spirit of togetherness to harness the innate and constructive abilities. The role of schools, colleges and parents is important in imparting the spirit of youthfulness and making children constructive citizens of the society.
Every year, the National Youth Day has a theme since 2011, to unify the celebration such as ‘Sabse Pehle Bharat’, ‘Celebrating Diversity in Unity’, ‘Awakening the Youth Power’, ‘Youth for Drugs-Free World’, ‘Youngman” and ‘Youth for Clean, Green and Progressive India’, ‘Indian Youth for Development, Skill and Harmony’, ‘Youth for Digital India’, ‘Sankalp ke Siddhi’, ‘Channelizing Youth Power for Nation Building’ and ‘Fit Youth Fit India.’
The theme for year 2022 is ‘It’s All in the Mind.’ The ability to bring change in society starts with bringing change in mindset by thinking positively and acting positive in all times. Strong willpower helps in overcoming any obstacles including addressing situations of pandemic and in promoting peace.
As a mark of recognition of the day, school children should focus on community service activities, both within and around the school and their neighbourhoods and get inspired by the life and work of Swami Vivekananda for making India proud in all spheres of life.
