Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Police on Saturday launched a campaign ‘We Can’ to prevent child abuse and create awareness in the society.
City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar, launching the programme at the Bharosa Centre, Basheerbagh, said teams of the Hyderabad Bharosa Centre would reach out to stakeholders, from schools to hospitals to orphanages to create awareness against child sexual abuse across all sections of the society and also follow it up with a strong action plan to make children aware of their safety.
For the last five years, the Bharosa Centre has been working day and night to tackle child abuse, helping victims recover from the trauma and ensuring that the abusers are strictly dealt with, he said, adding that the uniqueness of the Bharosa Centre was that it had several services under one roof to help a victim at any given point of time. The Centre has a medical division, a legal division, a counselling centre and police team for assisting victims.
“Since its inception, Bharosa have touched the lives of 10,000 families positively, facilitating from the reporting of the crime, to filing the charge sheet ensuring convictions and facilitating grant of compensation to the victims,” he said, lauding the actions by the Bharosa team in each and every case from 66 law and order police stations in the city which resulted in 86 convictions.
Shikha Goel, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes), mentioned about the recent success stories of the cases that Bharosa dealt with resulting in 30 years of rigorous imprisonment in one case and 25 years of rigorous imprisonment in another case to the guilty. She said that as part of the Cyber Smart programme, in collaboration with WNS Cares Foundation, awareness programmes were held for children in 100 schools in Hyderabad.
Manasa Varanasi, Femina Miss India, has taken up the cause of preventing and stopping child sexual abuse and will be associating with Bharosa as part of her Project 1098 initiated to promote the safety and security of the children. A video and audio song too were released on the occasion.
