DNA tests underway to identify 18 unidentified Sigachi accident victims; reports on Thursday

Sangareddy: Efforts to identify the deceased through DNA testing have gathered pace, with the Sangareddy district administration expecting to receive DNA reports from 11 families by Thursday. These will be matched by doctors with 18 unidentified bodies being kept in the mortuary at the government hospital in Patancheru.
District officials said 36 bodies have been retrieved so far, of which 18 were identified and sent to their respective native places in ambulances. However, the remaining 18 bodies are yet to be identified.
To facilitate the identification process, health department staff collected DNA samples from blood relatives of 23 families and sent them to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). The expected reports from 11 families are likely to aid in matching and confirming more identities.
Meanwhile, rescue operations continued for the third consecutive day at the Sigachi Chloro Chemicals Private Limited accident site. The death toll has crossed 40, with officials preparing to shift a few more recovered bodies to the mortuary.
Sigachi management has confirmed that the toll has touched 40. As of Wednesday evening, 15 employees were still missing. Meanwhile, 34 injured persons were undergoing treatment in five hospitals, with the condition of more than 10 of them reported to be critical.
