Mulugu: A four-member gang of fake Naxals that has been allegedly extorting money from people in the name of CPI (Maoists) was arrested by the Eturunagaram police in the district on Sunday. The police also seized four handwritten letters in the name of CPI (Maoist) party leader Damodar, one fake black colour pistol, a television set, a mixer grinder, a motorcycle, a car and four mobile phones from their possession.
At a press conference here on Monday, SP Sangram Singh said the police received information from a person in Eturunagaram stating that one person had demanded Rs 20 lakh from him after handing over a letter purportedly written by the CPI (Maoist) leader.
“Subsequently, SI Eturunagaram went to the complainant’s house and apprehended one person and also found a fake plastic pistol with him. Further, the police also found a handwritten letter on the letterhead printed in the name of the Telangana state committee of the CPI (Maoist) party and in the name of Damodar. On interrogation, the accused revealed that three more persons were involved in this extortion racket,” he said, adding that police also apprehended the other accused. “The main accused confessed that as all of them were facing some financial problems and took to extortion to make easy money,” the SP said.
“Over a period of three months, the gang sent threatening letters to four persons in Mulugu district and demanded money ranging from Rs 10 lakhs to Rs 20 lakhs from the persons. Of the four, one person (victim) actually gave them Rs 15 lakhs cash and didn’t inform anyone out of fear,” Sangram Singh said, adding that they found no link between the accused and leaders of CPI(Maoist) party.
“A total of four FIRs have been registered under extortion and attempt to extortion sections of IPC in Eturunagaram, Kannaigudem and Mulugu police stations and the investigation is on. Till now, Rs 13,50,000 cash has been recovered along with other items. Efforts are being made to recover the remaining amount too. We are not revealing the names of the accused as of now as it would become a hindrance in the further probe,” the SP added.
