Nalgonda: Highlighting their growing frustration over a severe urea shortage, farmers across the district took to the streets on Friday, staging sit-in dharnas and demonstrations demanding immediate supply of the essential fertiliser.
The protests, which began as early as 4 a.m. in some areas, highlighted the impact on kharif crops, with cultivators warning of heavy losses due to nutrient deficiency.
Tungaturthi: The unrest escalated in Tungaturthi mandal, where farmers blocked the main road at Nagaram on Friday, staging a dharna to protest the ongoing crisis.
Dozens of farmers sat on the road, chanting slogans and voicing their anger against local authorities. Speaking to the gathering, several farmers lamented that officials had been making them stand in queue lines for days together for urea, but supplies remained elusive. “Our investments are going down the drain; crops are wilting without timely fertiliser,” one protester said, as the group demanded swift intervention to ensure urea distribution. The blockade disrupted local traffic.
Atmakur: Urea shortage sparked agitations in Atmakur ‘Y’ mandal headquarters on Friday. Farmers staged a sit-in protest outside distribution points, refusing to leave until urea stocks arrived. The demonstrations turned chaotic as queues swelled, resulting in heated exchanges between cultivators and officials.
Aravapalli: The unrest spilled onto the Jangaon-Suryapet National Highway, where a group of farmers staged a dharna on the road, stopping vehicles and drawing attention to their plight. Banners and placards reading “Give urea or compensate crop losses” dotted the site, as protesters appealed for urgent government action to avert an agrarian crisis.
Adavidevulapally: Farmers made a beeline outside the Rytu Vedika from 4 a.m. in hope of securing urea bags. Eyewitnesses described scenes of exhaustion, with farmers standing in line under the morning sun. While some managed to secure a bag or two, others returned empty-handed.
