Hyderabad: Historian and former dean of Jawaharlal Nehru University Mrudula Mukherjee has called for a proper overhaul of books being prescribed in schools and colleges. She was speaking at a Gandhi Memorial Lecture organised virtually by the Sarvodaya International Trust Telangana and AP Chapter here on Saturday.
She said there was a dangerous trend of lies and communal stances being forced on children through textbooks. Mrudula also pointed out that there was a huge gap between the homage paid to the Mahatma and practice of his teaching in the real world.
Citing the happenings at Delhi, she was critical about the manner in which governments treated the farming community. She voiced concern at the manner in which the food providers of the nation were not a part of the priority narrative. She pointed out how moral and physical courage were necessary to be a Gandhian. Human rights and civil liberties were non-negotiable facets of Gandhism, she added.
