Four flyovers to be opened for public this year in Hyderabad
The flyovers under various stages of construction are coming up in Kondapur, Shaikpet, Balanagar, Bairamalguda and Owaisi Junction, with four of them to be opened to the public this year itself.
Hyderabad: Refusing to bow down to the challenges thrown by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is steaming ahead with its plans to decongest Hyderabad with augmented infrastructure. Under the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), a series of flyovers in different parts of the city are part of 20 infrastructure projects being built at a cost of Rs 4,741.97 crore.
The flyovers under various stages of construction are coming up in Kondapur, Shaikpet, Balanagar, Bairamalguda and Owaisi Junction, with four of them to be opened to the public this year itself. “The flyover crossing Seven Tombs and Whisper Valley junction, LB Nagar flyover and Bairamalguda flyover will be inaugurated this December,” a GHMC official said. As per State government records, GHMC and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority(HMDA) in coordination with National Highways Authority of India is preparing a detailed project report for 12 works, the cost of which sums up to Rs 12,044 crore.
“Among the 20 SRDP works, only two projects worth Rs 661 crore are held up due to land acquisition issues. The remaining projects are under various stages of construction,” an official from Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MAUD) department said.
The city has already undergone a major infrastructural metamorphosis in the last six years. State government records reveal that the pandemic, which pushed several sectors across the country into losses, was unable to dent the ongoing infrastructure projects in Hyderabad.
In six years, a whopping Rs 1,010.77 crore was spent to build flyovers and underpasses. The works include nine flyovers, four underpasses, three road over bridges/road under bridges. GHMC officials said when lockdown was imposed, works pertaining to infrastructure projects gained traction.
“As there were no traffic restrictions during lockdown, works were executed round the clock and several projects were completed before the deadline,” said a GHMC official. While construction was underway, a plan to ensure GHMC’s coffers do not dry up was already tabled. The civic body floated bonds and raised a Rs 2,500-crore term loan as well. To further reduce the money being spent, GHMC officials issued Transfer Development Rights (TDR) certificates to the property owners instead of monetary compensations for the lands acquired. SRDP was formulated with an estimate of Rs 25,000 crore and the works were prioritised in five phases.
