Hyderabad: The Uppal Junction, one of the major gateways into Hyderabad from Warangal and other districts, is undergoing a major infrastructure metamorphosis.

The transformation, which will cost about Rs 311 crore, will see four flyovers dot the busy junction in the next two years.

The projects include a three-lane left hand side flyover parallel to the Uppal Metro Station, a three-lane right hand side flyover parallel to the Metro Station, a six-lane elevated corridor near Uppal Junction and a three-lane curved flyover near Uppal Stadium Road.

Currently, traffic at the junction is chaotic. With the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium also located in Uppal, the chaos gets worse when matches are held. A study of the peak hour traffic flow per hour in 2015 found it to be 11,334 passenger car units (PCUs) and estimated flow per hour by 2035 to be around 18,148 PCUs.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), which is executing the four projects under the State government’s Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), is aiming at reducing commuter woes and ensuring smooth flow of traffic in Uppal with the flyovers.

As per the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the Uppal Junction improvement by building the proposed flyovers is necessary in order to decongest traffic and reduce travel time for commuters. Administrative sanction has already been accorded and land acquisition is under way. Government as well as private properties are being acquired for these four projects.

Besides these SRDP projects, a four-lane 6.25-km-long elevated corridor is being built from Narapally to Uppal Junction. The work has been taken up by the Roads&Buildings Department on behalf of the National Highways Authority of India. The NHAI is also building a 1.46-km flyover at Amberpet. In addition to these projects in the eastern part of the city, a series of flyovers, road over bridges (RoBs) and road under bridges (RuBs) are being built in different parts of the city under SRDP.
