Hyderabad: The Telangana government is reportedly considering a proposal to introduce free travel on the city’s Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) trains from June 2, marking Telangana Formation Day, according to certain reports being circulated here on Sunday.
The plan, reportedly in a preliminary stage, is proposed as a one-year pilot aimed at boosting public transport usage, easing traffic congestion, and reducing pollution levels in Hyderabad. If implemented, the scheme would allow all commuters, irrespective of gender, to travel free of cost across all MMTS routes.
According to reports, the State government is prepared to compensate South Central Railway (SCR) for the anticipated revenue loss, estimated at around Rs 10 crore annually. Alongside the fare waiver, efforts are also being discussed to enhance services, including increasing train frequency during peak hours and upgrading station infrastructure.
However, railway authorities have not issued any official confirmation so far. Sources in the SCR said there is no clarity yet on the proposal, and any such proposal would require formal approval from the Railway Board before any rollout.
