Hyderabad: The operation and maintenance (O&M) of the sewerage system in the peripheral circles of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will soon be taken up by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB).
As on date, all O&M of sewage system within the city are being handled by the HMWSSB while the GHMC takes care of peripheral areas. The civic body will now hand over its sewerage O&M along with the staff and machinery to HMWSSB on or before August 31. In March 2020, the HMWSSB had taken over the maintenance of the sewage network in the city peripheries, covering 66 of the 150 wards, from GHMC.
According to an office memorandum issued by GHMC on July 30, the activity was being handed back to the water board as per the instructions of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao.
“On an average, the amount spent for operation and maintenance of the sewerage system in the peripheries is over Rs 8.5 crore per month,” a HMWSSB official said. With this decision, the entire sewerage network in the entire GHMC limits now comes under the control of HMWSSB.
