Hyderabad: GMR Aero–led consortium GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL) announced that the expanded passenger terminal at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has been awarded the prestigious LEED Platinum certification. The recognition was granted under the LEED v4 Building Design and Construction: New Construction and Major Renovations rating system by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
The terminal earned an impressive 84 points, placing it among the highest-rated airport facilities globally in terms of sustainable design and performance.
The expanded Integrated Passenger Terminal adds approximately 379,370 square metres of built-up area to the existing terminal and was developed with sustainability at the core of its design and construction.
Key green features include high-efficiency HVAC systems, advanced insulation for better thermal performance, and LED lighting systems regulated by occupancy sensors—all of which help significantly reduce energy consumption while maintaining passenger comfort. Water conservation measures include rainwater harvesting systems, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and the use of native, drought-tolerant landscaping to reduce irrigation needs.
Operational improvements such as paperless e-boarding and self-baggage drop facilities enhance efficiency while supporting waste reduction. Additionally, the airport’s intelligent Building Management System plays a critical role in tracking energy usage and maintaining optimal indoor environmental conditions in line with LEED standards.
