Khammam: The wife of a Government Railway Police (GRP) Sub-Inspector died by suicide, triggering tension in Khammam on Monday. The woman, Rajeshwari (34), reportedly consumed pesticide on June 25 at the couple’s rented residence in Julurpadu, Kothagudem district.
She had informed her family members, who rushed her to Kothagudem Government General Hospital. She was later shifted to a private hospital in Khammam and subsequently taken to Hyderabad for advanced treatment as her condition worsened. Doctors declared her dead around midnight on Sunday.
Rajeshwari, a native of Subhash Chandra Bose Nagar Colony in Kothagudem, was married to Banoth Rana Pratap of Ramulu Thanda in Raghunathapalem mandal, Khammam, eight years ago following a love marriage. Rana Pratap is currently serving as an SI with the GRP in Khammam.
In a complaint to Julurpadu police, Rajeshwari’s father, Keloth Somla, alleged that she was mentally and physically harassed by her husband, mother-in-law Pushpavathi, father-in-law Chandram, and brother-in-law Mahesh, who is also a Sub-Inspector of Police in the district.
According to the complaint, the in-laws had levelled allegations of illicit relations against Rajeshwari and allegedly told her to “live as they say or end her life”. Unable to cope with the humiliation and pressure, she took the extreme step, Somla stated.
Based on the complaint, Julurpadu SI Ravi registered a case and launched an investigation. On Monday evening, Rana Pratap and his father Chandram were taken into custody.
Tension prevailed earlier in the day at Khammam Government General Hospital when Rajeshwari’s family members attempted to attack Chandram outside the mortuary.
Local sources said Rana Pratap had a reputation for misconduct since the beginning of his service. He and his brother were previously accused of threatening a footwear shop owner with a gun during his training period as an SI.
