Karimnagar: The issue of remerging Husnabad Assembly constituency with Karimnagar district has once again come to the fore following a statement made by Revenue Minister Pongulati Srinivas Reddy.
Replying to questions raised by members in the Assembly on Tuesday, the Minister said the State government would reorganise districts, revenue divisions and mandals by following a scientific method.
This statement has rekindled hopes among local residents regarding the remerging of Husnabad with Karimnagar district. The issue has once again become a subject of discussion among the public. Earlier, the Husnabad Assembly constituency was part of Karimnagar district.
However, following the creation of new districts in 2016, the constituency was merged into Siddipet district. In addition, several mandals of the constituency were split and merged with different districts, contrary to the sentiments of local residents.
Husnabad municipality along with Bejjenki, Koheda and Akkannapet mandals was merged into Siddipet district, while Bheemadevarapalli and Elkathurthi mandals were later included in Hanamkonda district. Only Chigurumamidi and Saidapur mandals remained in Karimnagar district.
There is a strong feeling among the local population that the constituency had forcefully been separated from Karimnagar and merged with Siddipet district. Residents have been raising the issue repeatedly over the years. People who had long-standing associations and emotional attachment with the erstwhile Karimnagar district expressed unhappiness over the division carried out in the name of district reorganisation.
Some residents also staged protests opposing the merger of their villages and mandals with other districts.
Local MLA and BC Welfare and Transport Minister Prabhakar, who contested from Husnabad in the 2023 Assembly elections, included the remerge issue in his election manifesto.
During the campaign, he stated that the constituency had been merged with Siddipet against public sentiment and promised to restore it to Karimnagar if elected. After the elections, residents questioned him on several occasions about the promise.
Responding to them, the Minister assured that the remerging of Husnabad with Karimnagar would take place at the appropriate time and that public sentiment would be honoured.
It is learnt that, given the strong sentiment, Prabhakar brought the issue to the notice of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and received assurances regarding the remerger.
