Hyderabad: Surgical oncologists at Continental Hospitals have successfully performed a surgery on a 40 year-old male patient who was suffering from Mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the lining of the chest and lungs, according to a press release.
Mesothelioma incapacitates the patient gradually and is caused due to prolonged exposure to asbestos and smoking. Most commonly, the cancer starts in the linings of the chest or abdomen, surgeons said.
The patient, who is a lone-breadwinner in the family and has three young children to look after, was admitted to the hospital with constant breathlessness, which on diagnosing was found to be this rare form of cancer.
Quite often, mesothelioma is diagnosed at a very advanced stage and five year survival rate is of about 5 per cent to 10 per cent. Most patients with mesothelioma of the lung die because of respiratory failure or pneumonia.
“Earlier, such patients were deemed incurable and put through chemotherapy, which is expensive. Due to the patient’s financial background, we decided to go for a complex surgical procedure to remove the cancerous lining from the lungs. The surgery lasted for ten hours and the patient has recovered from it fully in two weeks,” said surgical oncologist, Dr. Ravi Chander Veligeti.
