Hyderabad: A doctor from the city was cheated to the tune of Rs 24 lakh by cyber fraudsters in the guise of sending costly gifts.

According to the police, the victim who works for a reputed private hospital in Secunderabad became friends with the fraudster,a woman claiming to be from Poland, on Facebook and since then have been in contact with each other. Eventually, they exchanged their phone numbers and continued WhatsApp chat too.

“After some days, the suspect told the doctor that as a mark of their friendship, she would like to send a few valuable gifts including costly gadgets and jewelry from Poland,” police said, adding that she also shared pictures.

Few days ago, the doctor received a call from a person who claimed to be a customs official from the Delhi Airport. He informed that the valuables will be released only after paying necessary customs duty fees, GST, Income Tax, Sale Tax, etc.

Believing it to be true, the doctor ended up depositing the money into various bank accounts and ended up being cheated. Following a complaint, the Hyderabad Cyber Crime police booked a case and have taken up investigation.
