Hyderabad: To put an end to the decades-old menace of pollution of water bodies due to illegal discharge of faecal matter, the State government has drawn a plan for safe management of faecal sludge and septage (FSSM).
As part of the exercise, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has built three Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs) and established a Dial-a-Septic Tank cleaner service.
One among the three plants, the one located near Nalla Cheruvu, Uppal, was inaugurated on Saturday by Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Minister KT Rama Rao virtually at PV Narasimha Rao Marg. He also flagged off 87 septic tank trucks and said that two more FSTPs located in Nagaram and Injapur would be operational in the coming days. The capacity of these two plants would be 20 KLD each.
The Uppal plant with a capacity of 40 KLD can treat around 14 truckloads a day generated from the surrounding communities covering approximately 80,000 people.
For the first time a price has been fixed for septic tank trucks. As part of Dial-a-septic tank cleaner service citizens need to call 155313 or 14420 and the vehicle will transport the faecal matter to the plant. People living in economically weaker sections will be charged less, said officials.
“A pro-poor tariff structure with an objective of cross-subsidization was approved to reduce the burden on slum dwellers,” said a HMWSSB official.
As a part of the project, more than 80 unregulated private desludging operators were empanelled and licensed. There have been several instances where faecal sludge was periodically decanted by unregulated private operators and disposed of in water bodies risking the health of people. “This project will improve public health, environmental quality and sanitation livelihoods,” said an HMWSSB official.
The Water Board has forged partnerships with the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), HT Parikh Foundation and Samhita, for knowledge support and technical assistance.
