Hyderabad: Not only the couple but even the guests at the ceremony experienced sheer joy as Telangana witnessed its first openly gay wedding on Saturday.
The marriage that was attended by the newlyweds’ close friends, family, and members from the LGBTQ community in Hyderabad took place at a private resort here in Vikarabad. So, it’s finally official – Supriyo Chakraborty and Abhay Dang are now husband and husband! The grooms looked dapper in the white suits they chose for the fairytale wedding.
‘Telangana Today’ first broke the news of their wedding in an exclusive interview with the much-in-love couple.
What made things even more interesting and revolutionary was that the wedding ceremony was officiated by a trans woman from Hyderabad, Sophia David.
“I felt overwhelmed, because after the grooms said, ‘I do’, I got the audience also to declare their visible allyship… and they said ‘I do’ too, wholeheartedly,” Sophia told this publication.
This was Sophia’s first gay wedding and the first time officiating it. She is most likely the first woman officiant in India too! On her experience, she shares, “I was incredibly nervous because it’s not like I was handling a work client, but I was doing it for two very dear friends and so the stakes are a lot higher. The best part was Abhay and Supriyo gave me all the autonomy I needed to curate the entire ceremony and the events that followed.”
As per Sophia, ‘emotional’ is the word that best describes the whole event. “All of us were emotional, the grooms were emotional, and our guests were teary and moved by the whole event. It was a solid outpour of love, support, and emotion – precisely what weddings should be. Besides, I knew this would make a solid dent in conversation around queer rights in India and marriage equality, so that fuelled our passion and commitment because representation is critical now,” added Sophia.
