Hyderabad: The Hyderabad traffic police will launch a major special drive against helmet-less and wrong side driving from Tuesday.

P Vishwa Prasad, Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) said that in the last three days, three people including a woman died in fatal road accident in different areas of the city due to helmetless and wrong side driving. Also, in all the three cases the traffic police found that the victims were not wearing protective headgear i.e., ISI standard helmet.

Motorcyclists are the common and most vulnerable type of road users who are getting killed in road accidents. Head injury is the single most common fatal injury seen among the victims who have died in road accidents, said the official.

This year so far, there are 215 fatal road accidents out of which 100 victims are motorcyclists and their death occurred due to non-wearing of helmets which is about 46 per cent of total fatalities.

“Wearing of Helmet reduces the risk of head injury by 70 per cent and fatality by 40 per cent and not wearing a helmet increases the risk of fatal injuries by three times,” said the Vishwa Prasad.

The official said that in order to prevent tragic road accidents and ensure 100 per cent compliance of helmet rule, the traffic police is launching a special drive from Tuesday onwards against the two-wheeler motorists who are not wearing helmet and also against the motorists driving in wrong route/direction of the traffic flow.

He said traffic police has been conducting a number of traffic education and awareness camps to educate the commuters on traffic rules and safety.

Sections and fines for violations of not wearing helmet and wrong side driving as per the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988:

• Driving without helmet is a violation under section 129/177 of MV Act

• Helmetless driving will attract a fine of Rs.200.

• Wrong side/route driving is punishable under section 119/177 and 184 of MV Act

• It attracts a penalty of Rs. 2000 and suspension of driving license

• License suspension for 3 months under section 19 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
