Hyderabad: Residents, commuters suffer as Telangana govt delays Chanchalguda steel flyover works

The Chanchalguda–Santosh Nagar flyover in Hyderabad, originally slated for 2022 completion, faces prolonged delays. Residents report potholes, narrow roads, and traffic congestion. GHMC cites past obstacles and promises project completion and road recarpeting by June 2026.

Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress government’s inordinate delay in executing the Chanchalguda – Santosh Nagar flyover works has left residents and commuters battling with pathetic road conditions on this stretch.

Although the first pier cap was installed in April 2022, the works continue to crawl at a snail’s pace, with no sign of immediate completion, even as 2025 is coming to an end.

Due to ongoing works, commuting on this stretch of the road has become a nightmare as it is riddled with numerous potholes, coupled with uneven surfaces at several places. The road condition is particularly pathetic near My Nation Pump Stations in Chanchalguda, Madannapet Mandi, and cremation ground in Saidabad, and Yadgiri theatre in Santosh Nagar.

“The traffic movement has gone from bad to worse in Saidabad area due to ongoing flyover works. Madannapet Mandi Road is in a bad shape, creating traffic congestion as vehicles move bumper to bumper during rush hours in the morning and evening. In addition, roads have turned dusty,” lamented Sindhura, a Saidabad resident.

Further, owing to the ongoing works, the road has narrowed down at several places, particularly near the My Nation Pump Stations in Chanchalguda and HDFC Bank in Santosh Nagar, leaving little space for vehicles to pass through.

“The road has become so narrow that if a bus passes, no other vehicle will have space. Despite raising complaints with officials concerned, barring filling potholes as an eye wash activity, the roads have not been recarpeted. We are having a bumpy ride every day due to bad roads,” said N Ravi, a local.

The 3.80 km four-lane bi-directional steel flyover had been conceived as part of the comprehensive development of the corridor from Nalgonda X Roads – Saidabad – IS Sadan – Owaisi junction under the SRDP by the GHMC.

Initially, the project works that commenced in 2020 were slated to be completed in two years. However, due to various issues, including Covid-19 pandemic, June 30, 2025, was set as a deadline for project completion. Even this deadline had been missed and now authorities have now set a new deadline of June 2026.

According to a senior GHMC official, in addition to court cases, there were 148 religious structures along the project that hampered the works.

“As now everything is clear, we have expedited the project works by moving a large number of men and machines. The works are slated to be completed in June 2026. Due to the movement of heavy vehicles and machines, the road has been damaged. We are addressing the pothole issue. Plans are on to recarpet the road,” the official added.
