Hyderabad student does his bit for Covid-hit

Ritish Kannayagari

Hyderabad: A couple of months ago, Ritish Kannayagari was like any other 21-year-old engineering student, pursuing a hobby, working as an intern at a tech firm and everything else that a common youngster would do. Come March, Ritish, his brother and their mother tested positive for Covid-19, and that changed the youngster.

Since then, Ritish has been actively involved in Covid relief, helping people find medicines, medical equipment and beds in hospitals. “I initially joined a Covid resource group to get help for my own family but later, seeing everyone helping each other and also after an experience of a random person helping us get a medicine for my mother at a hospital, I decided to join hands with everyone and do my bit to help save lives,” says the final-year student of KMIT.

Ritish, who is also an avid bird photographer, started volunteering when he himself was down with Covid and was isolated in the house. “I usually focus on helping people in finding drugs, NIV masks, oxygen concentrators and other necessary equipment. Sometimes I buy the items including medication and go deliver it myself,” says the youngster who helps out with 10-15 cases on an average every day.

It is to be ensured there is no middleman or person who requested for help isn’t a middleman. “It’s a scenario where you never know who is a middleman procuring drugs and is selling at a higher cost. I always try to ensure that the patient who needs the drug, gets it at the MRP,” he shares.
