Hyderabad: The nearly 5,000 residents of Surya Nagar Colony, Shaikpet, celebrated the 79th Independence Day on Friday in a novel way — by inviting garbage collectors and sweepers who work in their area to hoist the national flag and be part of their celebrations.
The moment was deeply emotional not only for the local sanitation staff but also for the residents, who broke into loud applause when the workers unfurled the Tricolour and sang the national anthem.
The celebration also featured sports events for seniors and juniors, 40 free blood tests, and a community breakfast. Speaking on the occasion, Asif Sohail, president of the Jubilee Hills Constituency 300 Colonies Forum, said, “These sanitation workers are our backbone. Every single day, they clean our streets and keep our homes healthy. The Constitution says all are equal, and today we proved it. They are not outsiders; they are our own. If someone abuses them, they abuse all 5,000 residents of Surya Nagar.”
The members of the Surya Nagar Colony Welfare Association also warned certain individuals who had allegedly attacked and hurled abuses at sanitation workers a few days ago.
