Aasheesh Pittie, a self-taught ornithologist from Hyderabad, has soared to international acclaim as the recipient of the prestigious H.H. Bloomer Award for 2025, presented by the Linnean Society of London.
The award recognizes outstanding contributions by amateur naturalists to biological knowledge—and in Pittie’s case, it celebrates a life dedicated to birds, books, and community.
“This has blown me off my perch!” Pittie said, with his signature blend of humility and humour. “I am deeply humbled and overjoyed that the work of amateur ornithologists is being recognised.”
Established in 1788, the Linnean Society is the world’s oldest active institution focused on natural history. While several scientists were honoured this year, Pittie’s award stands out—proof that passion and persistence can rival formal credentials in the advancement of science.

Pittie’s journey began in the 1970s, in an era when birding in India was a solitary pursuit. Without access to institutional support, he charted his own path—meticulously observing birds, recording their behaviour, and, over time, creating a body of work that would become indispensable to South Asian ornithology.
Among his most significant contributions is the Bibliography of South Asian Ornithology—a vast, searchable database that serves as a key reference for researchers across the world. He also founded the Journal of South Asian Ornithology, a rare space where professionals and passionate amateurs could share discoveries on equal footing.
Pittie’s impact goes well beyond his publications. Through decades of mentoring, emails, field walks, and online forums, he has inspired countless birders. His ethos is simple: science is for anyone who observes with care, records with honesty, and shares with generosity.
His recent book, The Living Air, reflects this philosophy. Eschewing the rare for the everyday, it celebrates the beauty of common birds in familiar spaces. With lyrical prose and quiet wisdom, Pittie invites readers to slow down, observe deeply, and rediscover wonder.

The H.H. Bloomer Award, named after British naturalist Harry Howard Bloomer, acknowledges those whose work has lasting impact outside the halls of academia. Pittie’s legacy—built from curiosity, community, and an extraordinary personal library—embodies that spirit.
“This honour,” he said, “belongs to every backyard birder and sky-gazing naturalist who has felt the joy of discovery.”
And with so many books, and so little time, Pittie continues to turn pages—both in print and in the skies above.
