Adilabad: Police busted an inter-state gang of Ayurvedic quacks on Tuesday with the arrest of eight members from Karnataka, who were duping the public under the guise of providing herbal treatment. Six motorcycles, 15 mobile phones and Rs. 15,000 in cash were seized. One more accused is absconding.
According to Superintendent of Police Akhil Mahajan, the arrested include Shekar, Pendre Kumar, Kodangal Amresh, Golar Anad, Yaligar Hazrath, and Anil Kumar, all hailing from different parts of Karnataka. A key accused, Kumar alias Baba, is still on the run.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to forming the gang under Kumar’s leadership to make quick money. They targeted patients visiting both private and government hospitals in Adilabad town, posing as Ayurvedic practitioners.
The gang sold concoctions they claimed were Ayurvedic herbal medicines, charging unsuspecting patients between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 10,000. Kumar projected himself as a qualified Ayurvedic doctor and gained victims’ trust through false prescriptions. The gang used mobile phones to contact patients, visited them at home, and used SIM cards registered under fake identities.
Police said the gang would then split the money among themselves. Five cases have been registered against the accused at Adilabad I Town police station, and two cases at Mavala police station. A special team has been formed to apprehend the absconding Kumar.
SP Mahajan appreciated Inspector B Sunil and SI Nagnath of Adilabad I Town police station for their efforts in cracking the case.
