Karimnagar: The State government’s initiative to set up dialysis centres and provide free treatment is turning into a boon for poor patients. In order to provide free dialysis to kidney patients, the government had established a centre in the district hospital on May 28, 2018. The centre, which started with 20 patients, is now providing services to 90 patients.
Unable to spend huge amounts on dialysis in private hospitals, poor patients are undergoing dialysis in the government hospital centre. A resident of Deshaipet of Choppadandi mandal, Perumandla Veeresham, who is undergoing dialysis for the last three years, said he used to spend Rs 9,000 on dialysis every week in a private hospital in Karimnagar.
Speaking to ‘Telangana Today‘, Veeresham informed that he had spent about Rs 3 to Rs 4 lakh on dialysis in a private hospital for one year. Hospital management used to charge Rs 3,000 per sitting and it required three sittings in a week. Moreover, he had to wait for hours together for his turn if there are any emergency cases. Sometimes, he had to undergo dialysis after midnight. He said, however, things have changed now.
Thanking the State government for providing free bus passes to kidney patients, he appealed to the government to fulfil their long-pending request of providing Rs 3,000 pension on par with disabled persons. The pension amount would help them to purchase medicines, he said.
Another patient, Jangili Rajamallu of Erdapalli of Shankarapatnam mandal, thanked the State government for extending all-out support to kidney patients by establishing a dialysis centre.
Stating that right from the beginning he was undergoing dialysis in the government hospital, he said the centre is equipped with all facilities. Damera Anil, the centre in charge said that every day, about 35 to 40 patients were undergoing dialysis. The centre, which has ten machines including eight negative and one each of Hcv and HBsAg, is being operated round the clock, he said.
