Khammam: Former Zilla Parishad chairman Lingala Kamal Raju has demanded the Congress government to set up maize procurement centres in the district immediately to help farmers to get minimum support price.
He alleged that the government has miserably failed in ensuring a minimum support price (MSP) for crops cultivated in yasangi season by farmers in Telangana state as well as in establishing procurement centres.
Speaking at a farmers meeting at Nagulavancha in Chintakani mandal in the district on Friday he said that Chintakani and Bonakal mandals were among the regions in the State with the highest maize production.
However, farmers were facing severe difficulties due to the lack of procurement centres. Even as the government announced a support price of Rs 2,400 per quintal for maize, middlemen were purchasing the produce for as low as Rs. 1,600 due lack of procurement centres, he noted.
Kamal Raju recalled that in the past, even during critical situations like the COVID-19 pandemic, former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had established procurement centres to ensure that farmers did not face hardships.
He further noted that the district ministers and officials were acting negligently to support farmers who suffered crop losses due to unseasonal rains. Farmers were facing hardships due to the non-payment of Rythu Bima.
It was unfortunate that farmers who were forced to stand in long queues for urea in the beginning of yasangi were compelled to sell their produce at distressingly low prices, Kamal Raju added.
The BRS leaders Mankena Ramesh, Boddu Venkata Rama Rao, Ponugoti Ratnakar, Gurijala Hanumantha Rao, Gaddam Srinivas, Vemula Narsaiah and others were present.
