Mahabubabad: In a shocking lapse at the Government General Hospital here, a patient who was alive was shifted to the mortuary by hospital staff who assumed he was dead.

The patient, identified as V Ravi of Jayyaram village in Chinna Gudur mandal, had come to the hospital three days ago seeking treatment for a kidney ailment. The staff reportedly refused to admit him as he was not accompanied by anyone and did not possess an Aadhaar card. Left with no option, Ravi stayed in the hospital canteen premises for three days, during which he became unconscious.

On Wednesday night, the hospital staff allegedly presumed him dead and moved him to the mortuary. The next morning, sweepers who went to clean the area noticed signs of movement and alerted the police. Town police arrived immediately and shifted the patient for treatment.

Speaking to the media, Ravi said he had not returned to his village since he had no money and no one to accompany him. “They refused to admit me, so I stayed at the canteen. Later, they dumped me near the mortuary and then inside it. I slept on the floor the entire night,” he said.

Hospital Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Jagadish said a full-scale inquiry was ordered to ascertain how the patient ended up in the mortuary and why he was denied admission. He added that between 1,200 and 1,600 patients visit the hospital’s outpatient department daily and treatment was provided even without an Aadhaar card or attendant.

The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed debate over negligence and poor conditions in government hospitals.
