Remember those handwriting classes that were often slotted in school to encourage students to develop cursive handwriting? Well, there is a reason one should focus on developing good handwriting as one hapless robber found out.
A 67-year-old Englishman who planned to rob a bank failed when the staff couldn’t read the illegible note written by him. Retired man Alan Slattery’s handwriting was so bad that no one could understand what was written and he eventually left empty-handed. Apparently, Slattery entered three banks over two weeks, asking cashiers to hand over the money by giving them notes.
His first attempt was at the Nationwide Building Society which failed. Later, according to a Sussex police spokesperson the staff somehow managed to read the note that went: “Your screen won’t stop what I’ve got, just hand over the 10s and the 20s. Think about the other customers.” At the second bank, the terrified cashier handed over 2,400 pounds to him.
The bank staff then called the police who began looking through CCTV footage to identify the man. During their investigation, they received a call from another bank that sounded similar to Slattery’s first robbing attempt. Using CCTV footage, the police managed to catch Slattery near the third bank and arrested him. He will now serve a six-year sentence after pleading guilty to all three charges.
