Hyderabad: A man, who claimed to be a Major in the Indian Army and cheated several families in the city to the tune of Rs.6.61 crore on the pretext of marriage, was nabbed by the Hyderabad City Police on Saturday. The police seized two cars, a jeep, fake educational certificates and Army uniforms from him.
Mudavath Srinu Naik (42), a native of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, was staying in Jawaharnagar on the city outskirts while his wife and son lived in Guntur.
According to City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar, Naik claimed to be unmarried and registered himself with marriage consultancies, arranging meetings with interested families. After meeting the family of the prospective bride, he would pretend to be interested in moving forward with the proposal and would collect money citing various reasons but later would switch off his mobile phone.
“Naik collected around Rs 6.61 crore from around 17 families in the city and cheated them. Using the money he purchased cars and property,” the Commissioner said.
Two cases were registered by the police in the city following which a special team of the Hyderabad Commissioner’s Task Force (North) caught Naik, who has been handed over to the Bolaram police for further action.
