Lingampalli Gandhi performing final rites of a Covid-19 patient in Mancherial on Monday
Mancherial: In a humane gesture, a driver of a private ambulance service performed the final rites of a Covid-19 patient after his family members abandoned the patient on Monday. The driver, Lingampalli Gandhi, won laurels from many for coming forward to do so.
Gandhi told pressmen that he performed the last rites of a Covid-19 patient belonging to Uttar Pradesh as his family members requested him to do it. “I decided to perform the ritual on my own in a crematorium in Godavari river bed near Mancherial town. I followed Covid protocol while doing so,” he stated.

Bhandari Prabhakar, the president of Private Ambulance Vehicle Association, appreciated Gandhi for organsing the final rites. “At a time when the drivers are drawing flak for charging hefty rates from customers, Gandhi set an example to others and proved that we can help the needy. His act is laudable,” he remarked.
Gandhi is one of few brave drivers who are rendering outstanding services to their customers. “He is working for 18 hours a day, considering the plight of certain families affected by the disease. He has been shifting at least two bodies to the graveyards every day, besides rushing patients of the virus to hospitals,” Nani, employer told ‘Telangana Today.’
Drivers express concern over their safety
Many drivers are expressing their safety in the wake of an alarming rise in positive cases of Covid-19 reported in Mancherial district. “Customers are not accompanying the patient, once they shift him or her in the vehicle. They are urging us to make video calls to know the medical condition of the patient. How can we take care of patients while driving the vehicle,” a driver questioned.
