Kothagudem: Maoists have freed a sub-engineer they kidnapped in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on November 11, after his wife took to the forests in search of her missing husband.

The 35-year-old sub-engineer, Ajay Roshan Lakra, was released unharmed at a people’s court conducted by Maoists in the presence of media persons and adivasis at Gangloor road area in the district on Wednesday.

For the past one week, journalists and people’s organisations operating in the Bastar region of the State made several appeals to the Maoists seeking to release the sub-engineer. Last Saturday, Maoists released a peon, Lakshman Partagiri, whom they kidnapped along with the sub-engineer.

In a daring act, the sub-engineer’s wife, Arpita Lakra along with her three year child went into the forests a couple of days ago, looking for her husband with the help of media persons. “I searched every village and location in the forests where I could possibly find my husband,” she told the media after her emotional reunion with her husband, Roshan Lakra.

Maoists have put forth demands like stopping the road works and withdrawal of police camps from the forests at the people’s court attended by over 500 adivasi men and women. “I thank media persons and adivasis who helped in finding my husband,” Arpita said. The kidnap took place when Roshan Lakra and Lakshman Partagiri engaged in a survey of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) road works at Gorna-Mankelli in Bijapur district.
