Hyderabad: DPS Nadergul organised Pi Day to celebrate the famous mathematical constant π on March 14 (3/14), which is meant to represent the 3.14 constant that results when you divide a circle’s circumference by its diameter.
The actual number is infinite, but two decimal places work for most of us, the school said. Various activities were organized on this occasion. The importance and usage of pi were explained in all classes. The students of grade VI participated in a “Pi-puzzle” where they solved an interesting jigsaw puzzle to deduce the value of pi. In class VII, the students calculated π value using different circular objects. In class 8 students recited the first 30 digits of π. The students of class 9 performed Buffon’s Needle activity to approximate π by dropping needles on a grid of parallel lines (whose spacing is greater than the length of a needle) and calculating the probability that they will cross a line. The probability is directly related to pi. Students of class 10 are given a maze with information about circles and must utilize this information to find the Area or the Circumference. Overall it was a fun-filled learning experience for the students which helped them to develop a sense of appreciation for the astonishing “Pi(π)”.
Pi Day is all about taking the mystery out of math and seeing how numbers affect our real world, the school noted.
