Hyderabad: Even though the Hero Group was started in 1956 by four Munjal brothers, the story of their success began much earlier in 1920s when the family was living in the bylanes of Kamalia and later escaped to cities in India during partition in 1940s during which time the seeds of entrepreneurship were sowed in the brains of the four brothers, explains Hero Enterprises chairman Sunil Kant Munjal. Along with such anecdotes, he briefly illustrated the different aspects of the Munjal family that went on to become the largest bicycle manufacturer in the late 1980s, thirty years after its inception.

Speaking at a virtual book talk organised by The Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) Hyderabad Sunil Kant Munjal spoke about his recently unveiled book ‘The Making of Hero, Four Brothers, Two Wheelers and a Revolution that Shaped India’. Munjal spoke about the different aspects of the book from talking about the extreme adversities faced by the brothers to become successful and how the second and third generation is taking forward its legacy.

“While I could have written about just my father Brijmohan Lall Munjal, but I choose to write about all the four brothers as my father was a firm believer of involving and crediting the whole family, which includes the employees, for the success of the company. Each of the brothers were unique in nature but they came together. It was always about the company first. The second and third generation of the family has held on to the cultural practices of the company while making some organisational changes,” said the chairman.

Elaborating on how the world has changed with the advent of pandemic, Munjal told Dr. Tapan K Panda, Professor & Director, NMIMS that the private sector is working in tandem with different governments – both Centre and State – in creating awareness and helping people sail through these tough times. “In the post pandemic world, I see higher adoption of technology and enterprises following hybrid methods in order to stay in the business. Companies will also become thoughtful and plan for any untoward situation in a more serious way,” he said.
