Hyderabad: The national flag, which was missing from the courtyard of the historical Moazzam Jahi (MJ) Market for nearly a month, has been re-hoisted by municipal authorities. The flag was removed from the 100-foot-high mast after its supporting cables gave way during strong winds.
The absence of the tricolour, which was highlighted recently in these columns under the title ‘GHMC faces criticism over missing flag at MJ Market,’ had drawn public criticism. Regular visitors, tourists and local shopkeepers had expressed their disappointment over the delay in restoring the tricolour.
The GHMC officials explained that maintenance and installation of national flags at various locations in Hyderabad was handed over to a city-based agency, ‘Flags and Poles Agency’.
“We allotted the job of cable fixing and stitching of the national flag with the same dimensions, which was first unfurled in 2020 during the BRS government regime on the eve of Republic Day celebrations.”
Strict instructions were given to the agency to follow the Flag Code of India 2002 and stitch the National Flag either hand-spun, hand-woven or machine-made, from cotton, polyester, wool, silk, or khadi bunting.
“We have given strict instructions to the agency concerned to follow the ‘Flag Code of India 2002’ and stitch the National Flag, whether hand-spun and hand-woven or machine-made, from cotton/polyester/wool/silk khadi bunting.
Accordingly, the agency prepared it and handed it over to us. The flagpole was painted white and fixed with a new cable that could withstand even heavy winds and gales, officials said.
