Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Singireddy Niranjan Reddy on Wednesday advised farmers in the State to cultivate pulses and small grains apart from reducing the use of fertilisers laced with chemicals.
Participating in a ‘World Pulses Day’ programme organised in Red Hills here, the Minister said: “We should not forget our roots for the future of our children. After the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, the food habits of villagers along with their lifestyle has come into focus.”
Stating that conventional food habits are always beneficial for everyone’s health, he urged farmers not to cultivate crops that are not useful to people. Farmers, he said, should move forward keeping in view the market demand in the world and to meet the requirements of the people.
Since the State government has been encouraging cultivation of red gram, farmers had cultivated the pulse in 10.80 lakh acres in the State this time, the Minister said, and advised farmers to reduce paddy cultivation. He said the consumption of pulses started 10,000 years ago and it was only later that consumption of meat began.
Niranjan Reddy said most people were facing health problems because of low consumption of pulses in their daily food intake. “The State government will extend necessary support to farmers who evince interest in cultivating pulses and small grains,” he said.
