Mancherial: Employees of State-owned the Northern Power Distribution Corporation Limited (NPDCL) boycotted duties in protest against ‘false’ cases foisted against certain staffers of the department recently. They staged a sit-in in front of the office of the Superintending Engineer here on Thursday.
A Joint Action Committee (JAC), formed by the employees of the corporation, said that around 200 staffers and 14 associations and unions extended their solidarity to the protest. The leaders of the committee said that they would continue their protest on Friday. They said they will call off the strike only when they receive a written assurance from the corporate office of the NPDCL.
Some of the demands of the JAC included striking of the SC, ST Atrocities Prevention Act booked against the three staffers including an assistant engineer of the corporation, to provide protection to victims, to transfer them to another place and to take steps to prevent assaults on employees of NPDCL in the future and to protect lands of the corporation situated in Chennur town.
In the meantime, the Chief Vigilance Officer of the corporation arrived at the office of SE and met Ramagundam Commissioner of Police S Chandrasekhar Reddy and to review the SC, ST Atrocities Prevention Act. He then held consultations with the employees and requested the agitating employees to end their protest, but the protestors did not agree to do so.
Two staffers and an assistant engineer belonging to power utility sustained injuries after being allegedly assaulted by councillors of Chennur municipality for obstructing them to lay foundation stone to erect sheds on December 6. Both the employees and councillors lodged complaints with police against each other. The rift snowballed into a controversy.
