Karimnagar: The Telangana State cooperative Apex Bank (TSCAB) had attracted the attention of the entire nation including Prime Minister Narendra Modi for emerging as a role model in the country for the computerisation of the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) in the entire Telangana State. Inaugurating the webinar on SMART agriculture from New Delhi on Thursday, the Prime Minister spoke at length about the steady increase of food grain production, diversification of crops, soil testing, organic farming, cooperative banks, ethanol production etc. He also stressed the use of artificial intelligence in the farming sector to reduce the cost of production and benefit the farmer. During the discussion on ‘Sahakaritha se Samridhi’ (from cooperation to prosperity), the Telangana State representative was given a chance to explain the computerisation of the cooperative sector to ensure transparency.
Explaining about the computerisation of the PACS, Principal Secretary (agriculture and cooperation) M Raghunandhan Rao and TSCAB managing director N Muralidhar said that there were a total of 906 PACS in the State including 798 affiliated to the DCCBs and 108 with commercial banks.
They said that they had taken up the computerisation of the PACS since 2015 onwards and emerged as a role model in the country in the computerisation of the cooperative sector to ensure transparency and accountability. Initially, they faced problems in the computerisation due to lack of interest among the employees, non-availability of infrastructure, frequent power cuts, no internet facilities, non-availability of data etc.
However, they could overcome all the hurdles by providing several rounds of training to the staff and auditors and preparing standard operating procedures. After computerisation, they made it mandatory for the End of Day (EOD) report with all PACS. The PACS were also linked with the DCCBs and TSCAB for collection of daily transaction reports.
They said that the computerisation of PACS had reduced the migration of customers to other banks and it had instilled confidence among them for transparent services and access to accurate data instantaneously.
The computerisation had also increased the business activities without additional human resources, they added. They had introduced micro ATMs at all PACS to help customers make banking transactions in their respective villages. The TSCAB was also linking refinance to the computerised societies, they said and attributed the success of computerisation of all PACS due to collective teamwork of cooperative department, PACS, DCCBs, TSCAB and NABARD.
